I’m surprised at how many participants in the Heart Kids Blogathon either have comments disabled or require registration before allowing people to post comments. This is crazy! One of the core defining features of a blog is comments. It allows people to interact with you and helps you build a dynamic community.
Blogs are way more than a one-way communication tool, and if you don’t have comments enabled and easy-to-use, you are missing out on a LOT of traffic.
I personally never register (well almost never) on a blog for the sole purpose of leaving a comment.
If comment spam is a problem, then there are lots of solutions. Askimet has a plugin for word press that virtually eliminates comment spam, and I know there are solutions for all of the other platforms as well. If you must, set commets to ‘moderate’ and screen everything, but the best way is to keep comments totally open.
I’ve even gone so far as to get rid of the ‘robots no follow’ default setting in WordPress. This means that when people comment on this blog, they also get a backlink to their site.
Bring the comments back! We want to join your conversation and if you don’t make it hard, good things will happen. ![]()

Couldn’t agree more Doug.
Have a special page about that topic at my blog.
You can find it here:

C’mon everybody, open up!
Hi Case. Nice post on your blog about comments. But at the bottom it says “comments are closed” Did you just disable comments for that one post?
