Trackback is one of those things that is hard to get your brain around. But it’s really not that complicated.
By using trackack, you can comment on another blogger’s blog by posting to your own blog. After you post, your blog tool will ‘ping’ the other blog to let it know that someone has continued the conversation outside of the original blog. In most cases an excerpt from the trackback will be posted to the original blog right above the comments.
Not all bloggers have trackback enabled, but if they do, you will see a ‘trackback URI’ link just below the blog post.
Here are the steps to do a trackback in WordPress.
1) Find a post that strikes your interest on someone else’s blog.
2) Click the ‘permalink’ or ‘archive’ link of that post (often you can click the posts title, or look for the link that shows the date the post was made)
3) look for the trackback URI link below the post
4) copy that link and go back to your own blog to make a contributing post on the same topic
5) before you publish, paste the trackback URI into the place in WordPress’ ‘write post’ screen called ‘trackbacks’
6) publish your post
In a few minutes, an excerpt from your post and a link back to your post will be published on the original blog.
Cool huh?
Word of caution: DON’T abuse this. Only do a trackback if you are really adding something meaningful to the conversation.
